“feeds” by db amorin

Artist’s Statement:

The piece, entitled “feeds,” considers the commodification of food; its gradual disassociation from purely biological necessity and a new emphasis on its sign exchange value. As food moves away from the natural and is technologically reconfigured as hyper-real, aesthetically pleasing representations of itself, our attachment to its original value is reconfigured as well. High-quality, closely cropped scans of oranges, apples, and a cut of steak were used as a canvas on which the image of the food itself was further abstracted with acrylic paint, rescanned, and finally compiled. This layered process of converting recognizable representations of food into something purely aesthetic would not be possible without technological advances, the same that create a widely accepted environment of simulation and succeed in only separating us further from the actual meaning of sustenance.

Do we know that we like what we see? Are we sure that we aren’t what we eat?
